Scanning Old Negatives

I discovered a box of old color prints made with a 35mm point-and-shoot from a 2000 trip to San Miguel de Allende down Mexico way. Naturally I started scanning the still present negs, and wow!  I’ve been scanning them each three times a stop under, stop over, and normal, then blending them in Photomatix . The result is way better than the original prints could ever be.. Apparently the dynamic range in the negatives is much wider than the labs could get batch processing your print order back in the day. Damn, another big project I’ll never finish.

Shooting Fireworks in Burnsville

Found out I'm pretty bad at shooting fireworks. The picture I prepared in my mind worked out fine, but the execution left a lot to be desired. First, the final image...

Burnsville NC Fireworks 2014

Burnsville NC Fireworks 2014

This is a composite of several shots with Photoshop massaging, which went as planned. I definitely wanted fireworks with people in the shot. But I made a bunch of mistakes while shooting this, so I consider the image a test run. Next year I’ll do it right. By the way all the images were shot from the exact same position with a 24mm lens. All I had to do was pick the ones I wanted to layer and blend. What would I do differently? I should have set up sooner, as it was impossible to be certain of good focus in the dark. The people shot should have been done at a high enough ISO to keep them sharp. Bulb didn’t work there. Of course, the fireworks themselves were all done using Bulb and a release. But even there the tripod wasn't set solidly enough. Like I said - next year.

The Black & White Show

Tonight is the opening of my Black & White and Books gallery show at the TRAC Gallery in Burnsville, NC. The show will hang until July 1. The space is shared with several truly excellent book artists. Here are the twenty images I have chosen to show.

Followup: the opening was a great success. I made some sales, had a great time talking to old friends and making new ones.  Note also the fine book art pieces with whom I shared the space. The images will hang until July 1, so if you weren't with us tonight you can visit the TRAC Gallery in Burnsville, NC any time in June. If you want to see me in person, I usually volunteer there on Friday afternoon.
